IDSB Deputy Director in the Media: Addressing Radical Content in Online Media and Its Impact on Youth
Dr Olivia Brown, IDSB Deputy Director and Associate Professor in Digital Futures at the University of Bath, has recently been hosted on This Morning and BBC Breakfast to discuss online and social media and the potential negative and radicalising effects on youth.
On the 18th of March, On ‘This Morning’ Dr Brown was invited to comment on the discussion regarding the new Netflix Series ‘Adolesence’ and how realistic the show reflects real online threats to young adults and adolescence. Dr Brown talked about the emoji language in online communities and their hidden meanings and emphasized the importance of parents openly and honestly discussing online activities and trends with their children to defend them from the exposure of radical and extremist contents.

On the 17th of March, on ‘BBC Breakfast’ a website promoting videos of deaths and Ofcom’s potential regulatory response was discussed, which featured a comment from Dr Brown highlighting the desensitisation effect of such website on the youth in particular:
